The Western Usambaras are a wild, forested mountain region constituting the northwestern section of the Usambara Mountains, twin to the Eastern Usambaras. The verdant area of woods, green mountain slopes, waterfalls and caves is known for its rich biodiversity, with its high density of endangered flora and flora species. Untamed nature surrounds the bustling and vibrant town of Lushoto, created by Germans in the 19th century and home to a wealth of colonial architecture. Favourite activities in the Western Mountains include hiking to the Lushoto Waterfall and Mkuzi Forest to see Colobus Monkeys and numerous incredible exotic birds. Visitors can also discover the pre-historic sites and early human footprints around Mambo and learn traditional methods of pottery making in the Kilieti Village.
