About Shiv Shakti Temple
Nestled deep within the maze of Stone Town’s streets in Zanzibar, Tanzania, lies the Shree Shiv Shakti Mandir Temple. Often referred to as the Shiv Shakti Temple, this small Hindu temple, established in 1958, is one of only two Hindu temples on the island. Hidden at the end of a narrow, nondescript alley and concealed behind a pair of yellow-painted wooden doors, the temple has become a popular stop on local walking tours. The temple’s courtyard, home to hundreds of pigeons considered sacred in Hinduism, is regularly cleaned by the temple caretakers. The Shiv Shakti Temple stands as a symbol of Zanzibar’s once-significant Hindu population. Despite its off-the-beaten-path location, it offers a charming glimpse into the rich cultural and religious diversity of Zanzibar.
