Maruhubi Palace

Stone Town, Tanzania

About Maruhubi Palace

Maruhubi Palace, built in 1882 by Sultan Barghash to house his vast harem, is located 4km north of Zanzibar Town. The palace was once an ornate structure made of coral stone and wood, surrounded by high walls inspired by park designs seen by the sultan during his 1875 visit to England. A devastating fire in 1899 destroyed much of the palace, leaving behind only large columns, arches, and the Persian-style bathhouse. The remnants of the palace provide a glimpse into its former grandeur, including separate bathrooms for the women and a large bath for the sultan's use.
