Former Slave Market Site

The Former Slave Market Site is housed in the Christ Church Cathedral in Stone Town, Zanzibar, Tanzania, and stands as a testament to the region’s history. This site, part of the cathedral’s heritage centre, narrates the history of the slave trade in East Africa in both English and Swahili. It fosters interfaith dialogue, educates tourists, bridges social and ethnic divides, and imparts lessons of tolerance and reconciliation to children, promoting an inclusive society. The exhibition traces the journey of slavery and the slave trade, from capture in regions like Congo, Kenya, and Tanganyika, through transport, buyers and sellers, working the spice plantations, the journey abroad, to freedom and the legacy slavery left on Zanzibar.
