Located approximately 5 kilometres offshore, Aliwal Shoal is the fossilised remnant of an ancient sand dune. It hosts vibrant hard and soft corals, tropical and subtropical fish, and seasonal congregations of ragged-tooth sharks. The reef includes popular dive sites such as Cathedral and Raggies Cave, and two notable wrecks, MV Produce and SS Nebo. Designated a Marine Protected Area in 2019, it safeguards critical habitats and spawning grounds, supporting ecotourism, fisheries sustainability, and scientific exploration.
