About Sheikh Josef's Kramat
This Kramat, or holy shrine, is the burial place of Sheikh Yusef of Goa, considered to be the father of Islam in South Africa. The Kramat is situated in the township of Maccasar, once a sanctuary for runaway slaves and the first Muslim settlement in the country. Sheikh Yusef was exiled here in 1693, after leading a rebellion against the Dutch colonial authorities.
