Macassar

Macassar is a small town/suburb within Cape Town close to Strand. The area's history is closely tied with Strand and its first inhabitants. The kramat of Sheikh Yusuf is a Holy Place to the South African Muslim community. In 1694, the Sheikh was exiled by the Dutch and he came to the Strand area which ended as his final resting place. He was followed mainly by fisherman who found the sea of the area uninviting and moved further up the coast.
