Kramat Of Sheikh Yusuf Al-Makassari is the burial place of Sheikh Yusef of Goa, considered to be the father of Islam in South Africa. It is situated in the township of Maccasar, once a sanctuary for runaway slaves and the first Muslim settlement in the country. Sheikh Yusef was exiled here in 1693, after leading a rebellion against the Dutch colonial authorities.
