Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, Botswana

About Mmatshumo

Mmatshumo is a small town in Botswana’s Central Province, located roughly 45 kilometres from the Makgadigadi Salt Pan - one of the biggest salt pans on earth. Makgadigadi and the reserve that surrounds it are home to diverse birdlife and, in the wet season, larger game such as wildebeest, lion, cheetah and elephant. In the midst of the park’s ancient lake beds lies Kubu Island, a rocky outcrop dotted with baobabs trees. It is superbly scenic in the light of sunrise or sunset and offers a bird’s eye view over the vast open spaces below it. Mmatshumo itself offers basic amenities such as shops and a health clinic, as well as a spattering of bars that provide a touch of nightlife.
