Rufiji River Delta

Tanzania

Welcome to Rufiji River Delta

Located along the coast of Tanzania, the Rufiji River Delta is a striking natural feature and one of East Africa’s most ecologically significant regions. Formed by the Rufiji River as it empties into the Indian Ocean, the delta is home to the largest mangrove forest in eastern Africa. These extensive mangroves play a vital role in protecting the coastline and filtering the river’s heavy silt load. The area also holds historical interest, as the German World War I cruiser Königsberg was concealed and eventually sunk here in 1915 after operations off Zanzibar. Visitors can enjoy river safaris, spot hippos and diverse birdlife, and explore the nearby Selous Game Reserve.
