Welcome to Momella
Framed by the imposing backdrop of Mount Meru, the Momella Lakes lie within Tanzania’s Arusha National Park in the Meru District. These seven shallow, alkaline lakes—Big Momela, Small Momela, El Kekhotoito, Kusare, Rishateni, Lekandiro, and Tulusia—were shaped by volcanic debris from Mount Meru’s eruption 250,000 years ago. Each lake is fed by its own spring and exhibits a unique colour, ranging from green to turquoise, depending on its distinct mineral composition and the algae growing within. Flamingos, herons, and African fish eagles frequent the waters, while giraffes, buffaloes, and zebras graze along the plains. A picnic site atop a small hill to the west provides breathtaking views of the lakes below, Mount Meru, and the Ngurudoto Crater. The tranquil Momella Viewpoint, perched in the park’s northeast, offers a peaceful setting with concrete benches, perfect for soaking in the serene surroundings and distant natural sounds.
