Gol Kopjes

A sprawling cluster of massive granite rock formations scattered across the eastern Serengeti, Gol Kopjes stands out against the surrounding sweeping grasslands. The term *kopje* derives from Dutch and literally means ‘little head’, referring to an isolated rocky hill rising above the surrounding terrain. Weathered by time, these formations create a rugged landscape of rocky crevices, sheltered hollows and elevated vantage points. They provide refuge for smaller animals and lookout points for predators, while the open plains around them are prime hunting grounds for cheetahs. These fleet-footed hunters pursue Thomson’s gazelles across the short grass, relying on speed and visibility to catch their prey. Lions also frequent the area, while seasonal movements of wildebeest and zebra bring further wildlife activity to the plains.
