Welcome to Empakaai Crater
Located in the Ngorongoro Highlands of northern Tanzania near the Kenyan border, Empakaai Crater is a striking volcanic caldera known for its dramatic scenery and peaceful atmosphere. Measuring roughly six kilometres across, the crater features a deep alkaline lake that covers much of the floor and attracts flocks of flamingos. The steep crater walls are lined with dense forest, creating a vivid contrast with the open grasslands below. Guided walks descend from the rim into the crater, offering panoramic views and opportunities to see wildlife such as buffalo, blue monkeys, bushbuck, and a wide variety of birdlife. Sitting at a higher elevation than many surrounding areas, Empakaai enjoys cooler temperatures and frequent mist, adding to its sense of tranquillity. Less visited than the famous Ngorongoro Crater, it offers a rewarding, off the beaten track experience.
