Welcome to Aliwal North

Set on the banks of the Orange River, Aliwal North was already developing as a health resort and transport centre when a railway was established from East London in 1885, causing the town to burgeon. Today, the town is a prosperous farming community and attracts visitors with its hot mineral springs, museums, historical sites and buildings, nature reserves and San rock art. The famous hot springs produce water with a temperature at around 34 degrees celsius, and are known for their curative properties. History enthusiasts will love exploring the numerous caves and rock shelters in Aliwal North, which are home to incredible examples of Stone Age artwork. The picturesque De Leon Park and Garden of Remembrance provide wonderful spots for strolls and picnics, while the Aliwal North Museum is packed with historical newspaper collections, photos and artefacts, and displays of street scenes.
