Kirindy Village

Madagascar

Welcome to Kirindy Village

Lying just outside the protected forest zone, Kirindy Village has a strikingly different landscape from its neighbouring reserve, with sandy, cleared plots where farming sustains local livelihoods. Simple homes and local shops line the village, while informal community centres provide spaces for gatherings and cultural events. The Avenue of the Baobabs, or Alley of the Baobabs, is an iconic dirt road flanked by ancient Grandidier’s baobab trees with their their thick, bottle-shaped trunk, easily accessible from Kirindy. Towering up to 30 metres tall, these majestic baobabs are estimated to be over 800 years old. The nearby Kirindy Reserve, within the Menabe-Antimena Protected Area, safeguards over 200 plant species, including towering baobabs as well as unique Malagasy fauna. Visitors can encounter diverse wildlife, from Madagascar’s smallest primate, Madame Berthe’s mouse lemur, to the formidable fossa. Chameleons, lizards, and the Northern Narrow-striped Mongoose are also prevalent, while birdwatchers might spot rare endemic species around nearby lakes and mangroves. Kirindy’s forested trails offer excursions for observing this biodiversity up close.
