Day 2
1 Night

In the morning, depart Antananarivo and travel east towards Andasibe, passing through rolling highlands that gradually give way to lush, tropical greenery. The landscape becomes increasingly verdant as you enter one of Madagascar’s most humid regions, where primary forests, lakes, and dense vegetation create a rich and evocative environment. Along the way, glimpses of traditional Merina villages appear across the rocky hillsides, offering a sense of everyday life in the highlands.

Arriving in Andasibe around midday, take time to settle in before an afternoon visit to the V.O.I.I.M.A community reserve. This protected area combines conservation with local partnership, supporting reforestation efforts while preserving the habitat of the region’s distinctive wildlife. As you explore, you may encounter brown lemurs, the haunting call of the indri, as well as chameleons, geckos, and a diverse array of birdlife.

As dusk falls, set out on a guided evening walk in search of the forest’s nocturnal inhabitants. In the quiet of the night, the forest reveals a different character, with the chance to observe lemurs and other creatures as they emerge after dark. Return to your lodge thereafter for a restful overnight stay, surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest.

Begin the day with a visit to the Special Reserve of Andasibe, a richly biodiverse forest best known as the home of the indri, Madagascar’s largest lemur. As you walk beneath the dense canopy, listen for their distinctive, echoing calls—one of the most evocative sounds of the island. The reserve, spanning over 800 hectares, shelters an extraordinary range of endemic flora and fauna, including delicate orchids, vibrant chameleons, elusive tenrecs, and a variety of birdlife.

After time to take in the forest’s unique atmosphere, return to Antananarivo in the afternoon, retracing your route through the highlands. The journey offers a final opportunity to enjoy Madagascar’s varied landscapes before arriving back in the capital for your onward stay.

Day 4
1 Night

Today, travel south through Madagascar’s central highlands towards Antsirabe, a journey defined by wide vistas of terraced rice fields and fertile farmland. The landscape is shaped by striking, sculpted hills known as lavaka, their rich red earth contrasting with the vibrant greens of crops and fruit trees—scenery that lends the region a quietly distinctive beauty.  En route, pause in Ambatolampy, a lively agricultural town also known for its long-standing tradition of aluminium recycling. This brief stop offers a glimpse into the rhythms of local industry and daily life before continuing onwards.

Arrive in Antsirabe in the late afternoon. Known as “the place of salt,” the town has an elegant, slightly nostalgic character, with broad avenues and a temperate climate that supports a variety of produce less common elsewhere in Madagascar. Founded in the 19th century, its European-influenced architecture and relaxed atmosphere create a setting that feels both unusual and inviting—an appealing place to pause and take in a different facet of the island.

After breakfast, continue south to Ambositra, regarded as the heart of Madagascar’s wood‑carving tradition. Here, the highland architecture is particularly distinctive, with homes adorned in finely carved wooden balconies and shutters painted in warm, vivid tones.

The journey onwards reveals a changing landscape, passing through the col de tapia, where fire‑resistant tapia trees line the route. Beyond, the scenery unfolds into a gentle rhythm of rice terraces, pine and eucalyptus forests, and scattered rocky hills. In time, leave the main road behind and follow a quieter path to Ranomafana National Park, where the surrounding rainforest signals your arrival at one of Madagascar’s most celebrated natural reserves.

Day 7
2 Nights

Retracing your route, depart Ranomafana and journey towards Fianarantsoa—“the city where one learns good things.” Along the way, there is the opportunity to visit a local wine estate for a tasting (subject to availability), offering a quietly unexpected insight into Madagascar’s emerging viticulture. Set among rolling hills, Fianarantsoa serves as a cultural and educational centre, as well as the gateway to the island’s southern regions.

Continuing south, arrive in Ambalavao, where you visit the Antemoro Paper workshop, a centuries-old craft with roots in Arabian tradition. Here, handmade paper is still produced using methods passed down through generations. Nearby, a community-run silk weaving initiative led by the women’s association Soalandy provides a further glimpse into local artistry and craftsmanship.  The landscape then shifts as you pass through the Andringitra mountain range, marking the transition between the lush highlands and the drier southern plains. Distinctive rock formations punctuate the horizon—the “three hillocks,” the sculptural “Bishop’s Hat,” and, in the distance, the imposing granite mass known as the “Gate of the South.”

Travelling onward through the vast Horombe Plateau, with its striking red earth and open expanses, you enter a more remote and elemental landscape. Passing through Ihosy, the heartland of the Bara people and their zebu herds, the day ends with your arrival at Isalo, where dramatic sandstone formations and wide valleys hint at the scenery to come.

Day 9

After a leisurely breakfast, we continue southward to Tuléar, the coastal terminus of the famed National Road No. 7. As the landscape subtly transforms, the lush highlands give way to the austere beauty of Madagascar’s western dry forests and the striking spiny desert of the Deep South. Along the route, we pause to admire the intricate Mahafaly and Antandroy tombs—distinctive, sculptural monuments that reflect the rich cultural heritage of the region.

Following a brief introduction to Tuléar, we proceed onward to Ifaty, a tranquil retreat just 27 kilometres away. The journey, now eased by a newly surfaced road, takes approximately an hour and leads us into one of the driest—and most intriguing—corners of the island. Here, an otherworldly landscape unfolds, dominated by the architectural silhouettes of spiny forests, where euphorbia and didieraceae thrive in quiet resilience.

Crossing sandy, sun-bleached terrain, we gain a glimpse into daily life shaped by this challenging environment, where water is precious and hard-won. Along the shoreline, mangroves gently fringe the coast, interspersed with traditional Vezo fishing communities. Slender wooden pirogues glide across the water at dawn and dusk, as fishermen follow age-old rhythms, while families gather along the shore awaiting the day’s catch—destined for the markets of Tuléar. This is a place of quiet authenticity, where life is lived in harmony with the sea.

Day 11
1 Night

At around 6:00, you will be transferred to the airport for your return flight to Antananarivo. Upon arrival and a seamless transfer to your hotel, the afternoon is yours to enjoy at leisure—an opportunity to explore the refined contrasts of Madagascar’s captivating capital.

Affectionately known as the “City of Thousands,” Antananarivo unfolds across a series of levels, each reflecting a distinct chapter in its history. The upper city, perched above the surrounding hills, was the heart of the royal era and remains the most atmospheric quarter. Here, the Rova—the former Queen’s Palace—stands as a powerful symbol of the island’s past, alongside the residence of the Prime Minister, now thoughtfully preserved as a museum. Many of these historic structures bear the influence of the French architect Jean Laborde, whose legacy is woven into the city’s identity.

Descending into the mid-city, the tone softens into a more contemporary elegance, where administrative buildings sit alongside stylish boutiques and cafés. Further below, the lower city reveals a livelier rhythm, centred around the broad Avenue de l’Indépendance. This bustling commercial district, marked by its grand railway station, offers a vibrant contrast to the tranquillity above—completing a cityscape that feels both layered and deeply evocative.
