Welcome to Lodwar
Situated in the remote Turkana County in Kenya’s north-west, west of the stunningly turquoise Lake Turkana, the small village of Lodwar is home to astonishing natural scenery, archaeological wonders, and an incredible basket-making trade. The primary drawcard is the UNESCO-listed, other-worldly Lake Turkana (also known as ‘The Jade Sea’); an alluring spectacle drawing travellers and photographers with its stark, striking and desolate landscape and the strange contrast between the dark, volcanic surrounding earth, pink hills, and bright-blue waters. There is an active volcano on the lake’s island, and several breathtaking national parks surround the body of water. History enthusiasts can look forward to seeing the site where one of the oldest nearly complete Homo Erectus fossils, the link between apes and humans, was found. Other highlights include numerous wonderful basket markets and an enormous Christ the Redeemer statue.
