About Chunya

Chunya is a district located in the Mbeya Region of Tanzania. It was established in 2012 and is bordered by the districts of Kyela, Mbozi, Momba and Rungwe. The main economic activities include agriculture, small-scale commerce and informal services. The district is home to the Chunya District Hospital and several other health centres. The district also has a vibrant culture with traditional dances, music and festivals. Tourism has become an essential part of the economy in Chunya as it is home to some of Tanzania’s most spectacular landscapes and wildlife. Visitors can explore the region’s vast national parks, experience its vibrant culture, or participate in exciting adventure activities. Chunya is also home to the Lake Rukwa Basin, one of Tanzania’s most important wetlands, which provides critical habitat for many species of birds and other wildlife.
