Shifting Sand Dunes

Shifting Sand Dunes, located near Olduvai Gorge in northern Tanzania, are a rare geological phenomenon formed by volcanic ash from the Ngorongoro highlands. Visitors can observe the crescent‑shaped dunes slowly moving across the landscape, take photographs of their striking black colour, and learn about their unique composition. Notably, these dunes are magnetised, causing the fine ash particles to cling together and shift as a single body, advancing several metres each year. Their unusual behaviour makes them one of the few migrating dunes in the world, offering both scientific intrigue and a remarkable natural spectacle.
