Bukkenburg Pottery Studio

A profusion of superb pots in a breath-taking environment!

An open, working pottery studio in the historic heart of Swellendam in the Overberg region of the Western Cape, South Africa, mid-way between Cape Town and the Garden Route on the N2 National Road.

David and Felicity are leading South African studio potters who have been working together in the tradition of high temperature, reduction-fired stoneware and porcelain since 1973.

Visitors are welcome to the studio and showroom, located in the magnificent grounds of the National Heritage House, ‘Bukkenburg’ (c1860’s), bordering the Drostdy Museum in Swellendam.

They produce a wide range of hand-made pottery on commission and for exhibitions, and a wide-ranging selection of work is on display in the showroom, which is attached to the studio:
Tableware, washbasins, lamp bases and a wide variety of functional and decorative stoneware and porcelain, including smaller pieces for travellers. Enormous floor jars, urns, platters, fountains, garden and indoor containers. Special commissions for interior and landscape designers, collectors and corporate buyers.

A comprehensive crating and shipping service guarantees reliable delivery to any destination.

David Schlapobersky and Felicity Potter run workshops and courses (including residential and team-building workshops) in all aspects of high-temperature studio pottery. The studio is spacious and well equipped and can accommodate groups of up to eight people at a time. They will also structure workshops to meet the specific requirements of small groups. Special home catering can be arranged during the workshops.

Accommodation is available at the studio in a two bed roomed self-contained cottage.

David and Felicity work from home and the studio and showroom can be seen at almost any time. They will even open up for you if you drop in after hours. If, however, you are traveling some distance, it may be a good idea to call or e-mail beforehand as they could be down at the coast fishing (particularly during the summer months)!
