About Walter Sisulu Square
Walter Sisulu Square stands in the heart of Kliptown, Soweto, South Africa. It is a site of historical significance, where on 26 June 1955, the Congress of the People convened to draft the Freedom Charter. This document presented a vision of a non-racial society and laid the foundation for South Africa’s current constitution. The square is named after Walter Max Ulyate Sisulu, a key figure in the anti-apartheid movement. Today, it is a national heritage site featuring an open-air museum and a conical brick tower monument that enshrines the principles of the Freedom Charter.
