Matla Education & Life Centre

Matla Education & Life Centre is located in one of the most challenged and famous communities in South Africa, Soweto. It is worth noting the plight of children in South Africa and also the outstanding work of all the staff at Matla to help its communities most valuable asset, its children.

* Under-five mortality is at the same level it was in 1990
* Maternal mortality has increased by 80 per cent since 1990
* Each year around 4,300 mothers die due to complications of pregnancy and child birth
* 20,000 babies are stillborn
* 23,000 babies die before they reach one month of age
* In total, some 75,000 children die before their fifth birthday This toll of over 270 maternal and
child deaths every day is mainly due to HIV and AIDS and poor implementation of existing
packages of care.
