Garden Castle State Forest

Spanning a section of the southern Drakensberg, this protected area showcases rugged mountains, alpine grasslands, and pristine streams. Well-marked trails lead to panoramic viewpoints, ancient caves adorned with San rock art, and the imposing Rhino Peak. The reserve is home to diverse wildlife, including elands, baboons, and lammergeiers. Visitors can stay in camping sites or self-catering cottages, offering a chance to experience the wilderness up close. Popular activities include birdwatching, trout fishing, and rock climbing in designated areas. Garden Castle is part of the Maloti-Drakensberg Park, South Africa’s first World Heritage Site.
