Shamwari Born Free Foundation – North, situated in the Shamwari Private Game Reserve in South Africa’s Eastern Cape, provides a permanent refuge for rescued lions and leopards. Visitors can tour the Jean Byrd Education Centre and Sanctuary, observing these majestic animals in large, naturalised enclosures while learning about their histories and the challenges they faced in captivity. The centre also runs educational initiatives for schools and communities, raising awareness of wildlife exploitation and promoting ethical conservation. Established in partnership with the Born Free Foundation, it offers traumatised cats a fresh start, ensuring they live with dignity and inspiring global support for animal welfare.
