About Vryheid
Meaning ‘freedom’, the small coal mining and beef farming town of Vryheid lies in northern KwaZulu-Natal and is known for its significant role in South African history, its enthralling natural vistas, and its variety of wildlife. The infamous Battle of Blood River was fought near here, where the Boers confronted the Zulu’s under Dingaan, and a wealth of sites, museums and memorials related to the Anglo Boer War are scattered around the town. Nature enthusiasts will enjoy soaking in the sights and sounds of the Vryheid Nature Reserve and seeing some of the 50 endemic bird species here including the blue crane, Gurney’s Sugarbird and Chestnut-vented tit babbler. Don’t miss the opportunity to browse the impressive traditional Zulu craftworks, and bathe in the curative hot-spring waters at the Natal and Thangami Safari Spas.
