About Honoured Dead Memorial and Long Cecil

The Honoured Dead Memorial, a provincial heritage site in Kimberley, stands at the confluence of five roads, paying tribute to those who defended the city during the Siege of Kimberley in the Anglo-Boer War. This sandstone monument, sourced from the Matopo Hills in Zimbabwe, serves as the final resting place of 27 soldiers and bears an inscription by Rudyard Kipling, commissioned by Cecil Rhodes. It includes the Long Cecil gun and shells from the Boer Long Tom, a poignant reminder of the city's wartime history.
