About De Aar
Situated in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa, the small historic town of De Aar is the second most significant railway junction in the country, as it is here that the railway lines from the northern provinces, Eastern and Western Cape, Zimbabwe and Namibia meet. The town is famously home to the country’s biggest solar plant, nicknamed ‘Lego Land’ for its appearance. A conservancy and two Nature Reserves provide a world of glorious hiking trails and a huge array of magnificent flora and fauna. The town is rich in both ancient and more recent history: superb examples of Khoisan rock engravings and paintings adorn the landscape, while several memorials commemorate those involved in the Anglo-Boer War. Don’t miss the opportunity to taste the flavoursome ‘Karoo Lamb’.
