Central Kruger, South Africa

About Magnificent Seven

The first big tuskers to be identified and named in Kruger were dubbed the Magnificent Seven, a nickname taken from a 1960s Hollywood western. The tusks of these incredible beasts are on display in the elephant museum at Letaba, along with photos and even a lifesize statue of the famous Shawu. This magnificent creature had the longest tusks ever to be recorded in Kruger, at a length of roughly three metres each and a combined weight of over 100kg. Sadly, tusks of this size have become rare due to poaching, and today most pairs of tusks weigh in at about 50kgs.
