Mwiki is a centre of refuge and support to children from extremely disadvantaged communities. It is worth remembering that of the 2.5 million orphans in Kenya, it is estimated that half of these have lost both parents due to HIV. And to add to the dilemma of Kenya, child abandonment rates are extremely high due to parents being unable to look after their children. In a community that experiences unemployment levels of 40% and with few welfare 'safety nets' many people just cannot cope. And unfortunately child abandonment is all too common. And many of the children because they are so young, cannot provide coherent information which enables their parents to be located or for us to determine even the age of the children.

We need the community to stand with us to help us break the back of factors which perpetuate poverty. We don’t need builders or carpenters. We need your life skills and empathy. The centre's focus is to take care and educate orphaned and abused children.
