Nairobi, Kenya

About Uhuru Gardens

A public memorial park, Uhuru Gardens was the site of the inaugural ceremony of Kenya's first president, President Jomo Kenyatta, on 12 December 1963 when Kenya gained independence.

Located on Lang'ata Road in Nairobi, the gardens feature a 24 meter high monument commemorating Kenya’s struggle for independence. The monument has on one side, a statue of freedom fighters raising the Kenyan flag, and a little further on is another monument with a fountain.

The expansive grounds of the Uhuru Gardens is a popular spot for picnicking, with secluded spots under scattered trees.
