About Mathare Creche
Mathare Creche
In Kenya illiteracy levels are very low and most people are bilingual. And the Kenyan economy has experienced significant growth over the last few years. It would surprise many people from the west but Kenya leads the world in mobile banking technology. And the contradiction is that 50% of Kenyans continue to live in poverty. It is a well educated and growing nation.
The Mathare crèche is in an area where most people live well below the poverty level. The centre caters for 75 children but there are many more in need and One Horizon wants to expand its work there. The needs of the children are basic. They need to be fed, clothed and kept safe. And One Horizon has variety of programs which are attempting to make life easier for the children and their parents. We have provided a library not just as a place of learning but as a refuge in the evening. It helps us keep kids off the street and away from the perils of the slum. The importance of the library cannot be underestimated. And then there are the new homes that we have built - dry, well ventilated with good sanitation systems for the children's families. And we have supplied mattresses to the crèche and community to keep people from sleeping on the ground.
Our programs make life easier for the children and their families. And your presence and support is what makes this happen. Your presence makes a difference
