About Kikuyu Centre for Children
Kikuyu Centre for Children
In Kenya there are few ‘welfare safety nets’ and with an average annual income of $750 it is not surprising that 50% of people live in poverty. And as in most communities aged persons are one of the most marginalised groups. In Kenya where many grandparents carry the additional burden of looking after their grandchildren, it is even a more desperate situation. HIV has left many children orphaned and being looked after by grandparents who do not have the means or the stamina to do this. Our goal is to feed and to provide education to children whose families would otherwise not be able to afford either. And it helps reduce the burden on grandparents.
The centre caters for 26 students from 2 years to 14 years of age. Our guests are enormously important in helping us implement our programs and we need people's support to make a difference to the lives of these children and their grandparents.
