About Eastlands Rescue Centre for Street Children

Eastland's Rescue Centre for Street Children
The centre rescues abused and abandoned girls from the streets of Nairobi. It currently has 75 young girls who live permanently at the centre. From the centre the girls go out each day to attend school. One Horizon is in the process of implementing a series of programs to help the centre sustain itself and to provide for all the needs to the girls. The Chicken Program is a small business initiative which will reap many benefits for the centre. In addition to their eggs, the chickens also provide meat and hence protein into the girl’s diet. The excess eggs are sold and the income is used to buy vegetables and fruit. The health benefits will be enormous and the girls will have a well balanced diet. Within two years and with an active breeding program there will be 1000 chickens. One Horizon supports the program with in-depth training of centre staff to be able to care for and breed healthy chickens. And of course a rescue centre for street children requires many programs of support - rescuing and rehabilitating abused and abandoned children is a job which is incredibly important for the future of Kenya.
