About Shakawe

Shakawe is a small village in the northwestern corner of the country, in the Panhandle Region of the Okavango Delta. The Okavango River is known for its rich fish stocks and visitors to this part of the world will have the chance to experience some of Africa’s most superb sport fishing. From August to September each year, boat cruises offer a chance to see the aquatic chaos of the Barbel Run, when thousands of barbels swim upstream slapping their tails to distract the smaller species that they prey on. Other river residents include hippos and crocodiles. The region also offers excellent bird watching, with exotic species such as Pel’s fishing owl, African skimmers, and narina trogons, as well as herons, egrets and cormorants.
