Gemsbok National Park

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (Botswana), Botswana

About Gemsbok National Park

Straddling the border between South Africa and Botswana, Gemsbok National Park, part of the expansive Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, covers approximately 28,400 square kilometres of arid semi-desert. Its landscape is characterised by red sand dunes, sparse vegetation, and dry riverbeds such as the Nossob and Auob, which provide seasonal lifelines for wildlife. Established in 1931 to protect migratory antelope, the park's history reflects early conservation efforts in the Kalahari region. Visitors can encounter iconic species like gemsbok, springbok, cheetahs, and black-maned lions. Self-catering chalets and campsites, equipped with basic amenities, accommodate travellers, while some areas cater to 4x4 vehicles for deeper exploration. Birdwatchers are drawn to the park's rich avian life, including raptors like the martial eagle. Activities include guided game drives, photography, and stargazing under one of the world's clearest night skies.
