About Ghanzi town
Ghanzi is the administrative centre of Ghanzi District in western Botswana. The town is located in the middle of the Kalahari Desert, close to the Namibian border, and is made up of several different ethnic groups living harmoniously side by side. It was formerly a sleepy border outpost, but new life was breathed into Ghanzi with the completion of the Trans Kalahari Highway in 1998. It has since reinvented itself as a bustling town that is touted as the ‘Capital of the Kalahari’ and the ‘Gateway to the Central Kalahari Game Reserve . The park’s resident wildlife includes antelope, hyenas, bat-eared foxes, cheetahs and the Kalahari black-maned lion, as well as abundant bird life. A 30-minute drive from Ghanzi Town is D’Kar, home to several San families who proudly uphold their traditional heritage. Here you can visit a cultural centre and gallery that showcases and sells an excellent collection of San arts and crafts.
