Malgas Pont

Overberg, South Africa

About Malgas Pont

Set on the banks of one of the largest rivers in South Africa and surrounded by fynbos-covered mountains, Malgas is a good base from which to explore the Overberg and offers a variety of fish and birds. It is also one of the more interesting places to cross the broad Breede River. This small riverside village is home to the last surviving hand-operated vehicle pontoon in the country. For a small fee, travellers can have their cars ferried across by a team of men who draw a pontoon attached to a metal cable across the river.
