About Kuru Art Project - Visit to Kuru Art Studio Tour and Craft and Coffee Shops
Located in D’kar, Botswana, Kuru Art Project is a vibrant cultural centre dedicated to celebrating and preserving San heritage. Established in 1990, the project plays an important role in supporting local artists while safeguarding one of the world’s oldest living cultures. It serves as both a creative hub and a platform for cultural expression, where tradition and contemporary art meet. More than twenty artists work at the centre, producing bold and expressive paintings and linocuts inspired by ancient knowledge, nature, and everyday life in the Kalahari. Their artworks often depict symbolic animals, plants, and storytelling scenes, reflecting a deep spiritual connection to the land and ancestral traditions. Many of these pieces have gained international recognition, showcasing San culture to a global audience. Visitors can enjoy an immersive experience by meeting the artists, learning about their creative processes, and hearing the stories behind their work. The on-site craft shop offers beautifully made items, including ostrich eggshell beadwork, sand candles, and hand-embroidered textiles created by local women. Guests can purchase original artworks or handcrafted souvenirs, directly supporting the community. A small café serving coffee and light refreshments completes this enriching and inspiring cultural visit.
