Dining & Cuisine

Dining Room and Bar

Tucked within the centre of Mbuzi Mawe Serena Camp, our tented dining room offers a welcoming atmosphere, as well as an expansive terrace with sweeping views of the plains. Breakfast and lunch are both served a la carte; breakfast includes international dishes, as well as a traditional full English breakfast. Lunch typically consists of meat, poultry, fish and vegetarian options.

For dinner, our table d'hôte menus feature a soup and salad, an entrée, a pudding, cheese and biscuits and fine Tanzanian tea or coffee. Vegetarian options are available as well. Choose a glass of wine or a fresh-squeezed juice to accentuate your meal.

Located within the camp’s central lounge area, our stylish bar is a welcome spot for a cocktail with friends after a successful day on safari.

Bush Breakfast

There are few better ways to begin your day in the Serengeti than with our bush breakfast. Allow us to awaken you with an early morning cup of tea, and then set off on a game drive, which is timed to offer you the very best chance of spotting “The Big Five”.

After your game drive, you’ll arrive at a chosen breakfast spot, where our hospitality team will be waiting for you with a glass of chilled sparkling wine and fresh-pressed orange juice. Savour a full English breakfast among stunning bush vistas before heading back to the camp on another game drive.

Balloon Safari and Bush Breakfast

A balloon safari is an excursion unlike any other. Drift in silence above the Serengeti plains, dip down to visit the hippo pools of the Grumeti River and enjoy a bird’s eye view of the wildlife theatre as it is enacted below you.

After a cup of tea around 5:30 am, you will be driven to the balloon take-off point, where a team inflates the vast rainbow-coloured balloon. A typical balloon carries around eight passengers and is equipped with seats and safety belts. At dawn, the sandbags are cast off, and the balloon rises majestically into the cool of the morning air, helmed by a fully qualified pilot.

The balloon will fly for a period of around 45 minutes, trailed by a team of ground vehicles, before making a gentle controlled-landing on the plains. Enjoy a glass of chilled champagne before sitting down to a full English breakfast, which is traditionally cooked on the burners of the balloon. After breakfast, enjoy a leisurely game drive back to the camp.

Bush Dinner

Our bush dinner typically takes place at a scenic location on the plains. Starting at around 6 pm, the dinner commences with a short game drive. Arrive at your chosen location, which offers fabulous views across the plains, as well as a table and chairs, a campfire, lanterns and a bush kitchen.

Sip sundowners around the campfire before tucking in to a five-course dinner, prepared on the blazing charcoal BBQ and accompanied by Maasai dance and song. Meat, fish and poultry are supplemented by vegetarian choices, salads, fruit and desserts from the main camp, and a full safari bar is provided.

Sundowners

Sundowners have been a hallmark of the safari experience since the 1920s, coupling the pleasure of an afternoon cocktail with the enjoyment of a majestic African sunset. Timed to commence as the sun begins to set, sundowners at Mbuzi Mawe Serena Camp begin with a leisurely drive to a scenic spot where chairs, lamps, a campfire and a bush bar with cocktail snacks have been set up. Musical entertainment can also be provided.
