Welcome to Chimfunshi Nature Reserve

Located in Zambia’s Copperbelt Province about 65 kilometres northwest of Chingola, the Chimfunshi Nature Reserve is one of the largest and oldest chimpanzee reserves in the world. The reserve serves as a rescue centre not only for chimpanzees but also for parrots, antelopes, owls, buzzards, and many other animals. Chimfunshi is also recognised as an important bird area, and is home to a huge variety of bird species. The sanctuary supports about 120 chimpanzees which have been rescued from poachers, traders, circuses and zoos. Visitors can observe the animals as they socialise, feed and play. It is also possible to volunteer for between 14 and 90 days. Don’t miss the chance to visit the Education Centre, which teaches guests about ecology and wildlife conservation, behaviour and ethnic studies.
