Welcome to Murchison Falls National Park Southern Section
South of the Victoria Nile, the southern section of Murchison Falls National Park is defined by a mix of forest-savannah, acacia woodland, and patches of open grassland near the Heart of Murchison. Wildlife here includes elephant, buffalo, Uganda kob, Jackson’s hartebeest, and bushbuck, with occasional sightings of leopard and lion in the more open terrain. Rothschild’s giraffes, once restricted to the north, have been reintroduced and can now be seen along southern tracks such as Honeymoon Track. The dense forests of Rabongo and Kaniyo Pabidi support chimpanzees, red-tailed monkeys, and colobus, while birdlife includes the chocolate-backed kingfisher and Puvel’s illadopsis. Though the park's northern section contains the main river launch and open plains, the southern side offers quieter wildlife viewing and guided forest walks. From some escarpment roads in the south-west, there are views westward over Lake Albert and the rift valley beyond.
