Zanzibar Beach

5 Days

Overview

The rugged beauty and authentic African and Eastern influences make Zanzibar a truly unique destination to visit. With gorgeous luxury beach resorts (on a much smaller scale than other Indian Ocean Islands), warm turquoise waters with magical diving and snorkelling and fascinating historical attractions, it’s an island escape that also delivers a distinct cultural experience. Zanzibar is relatively affordable as far as island getaways go, giving you the opportunity to combine your beach escape with a Tanzanian safari.

Take a walk through Stone Town and the surrounding villages and admire the unique architecture or enjoy a heady spice tour. Browse through street markets and visit the Jozani forest, one of the last remaining sanctuaries of the red Colobus monkey. You can easily combine your Zanzibar beach experience with the Great Migration in Tanzania or a South African itinerary featuring Cape Town and Kruger.

You will be met on arrival at Johannesburg airport and assisted with your check in on your flight to Zanzibar. It is likely that your flight will stop at Dar es Salaam, but after a short wait you are back up in the air for a hop and skip over to “The Spice Island”. On arrival at Zanzibar Airport, you'll be met and transferred to your beachfront hotel in time for dinner.

Set up on a cliff with the most spectacular views over the “blue lagoon”, Zawadi, in our opinion is the ultimate private beach retreat. Surrounded by swaying coconut palm trees and bright bougainvillea, it’s relaxed luxury at its best on one of the most coveted beaches on the island.

The beach is right on your doorstep, offering the best of the island's swimming and snorkelling. Luxuriate in the warm cauldron that is the Indian Ocean and stretch out underneath the bronzing sun away from the crowds and other nearby resorts. With only nine suites, Zawadi is intimate and elegant; each villa boasts a spacious 100sqm of ultimate luxury overlooking the ocean.

The lodge is only 60 minutes from the airport, but it feels like you are miles from anywhere. It's a laid back hideaway, an exclusive stay with the very best cuisine and personalised service.

Top spots to visit during your stay are the northern beaches of Nungwi and Kendwa. Down the east side of the island, Paje and Jambiani are known for their kite-surfing opportunities. The sea here is shallow for a long way out, making for stunning photo opportunities. The number one activity in Stone Town is exploring, so allow yourself plenty of time to get lost in narrow alleyways and ancient, majestic doorways that loom high above you. Activity number two is eating, so make sure you come hungry! There are nightly food markets where you can enjoy tasty seafood that is freshly caught and barbecued in front of you. Sugar cane juice is the island's trademark and something you have to try. Vendors will squeeze sugar cane through an old-school juicer that resembles an 18th century clothes drier. A sprinkling of ginger or lime and your refreshing drink is ready to go.

After breakfast this morning, you will be collected from your hotel and transferred to Zanzibar Airport for your flight back to Johannesburg. Hopefully this is either the end of a longer African journey or you're heading on to your next destination - we can help you find the perfect combination.
