Winter with the Whales at De Hoop

Yes, winter is around the next corner, and with the cooler months, comes the arrival of hundreds of Southern Right Whales to De Hoop Nature Reserve, outside Bredasdorp in the Overberg.

Each year we wait in anticipation for this spectacular season of whale watching from the pristine beaches of Koppie Alleen. Guests and day visitors alike gather from around June each year to watch the breeching, spy hopping and flukes as these majestic mammals travel along the coastline. The De Hoop Marine Reserve, which celebrates 30 years this year, is an important breeding ground for the Southern Right Whales, and aerial photographs have revealed numerous mother and calf pairs spending time in the bay.
