Wildlife Wednesday - Bat-eared Foxes and Scops Owls at RiverBend
Reports of sightings of these two wonderful animals at RiverBend Lodge in the Eastern Cape are featured in this week''s Wildlife Wednesday slot...

Bat-Eared Foxes

Although not an uncommon sighting in many parts of South Africa, RiverBend has only recently started to encounter these playful foxes. Bat-Eared Foxes tend to pair for life and the pair we have here certainly seem to enjoy each other’s company. At first the foxes were seen in a family group of 6 but recently it seems the pups have left the parents, as the 2 adults are more regularly encountered than the pups. The main habitat requirement of these chaps is the presence of harvester termites, which make up a large part of their diet.

African Scops Owl

Another species that is not encountered often at Riverbend is the tiny African Scops Owl. Recently however the unmistakable ‘prrrup’ of this owl, which happens to be the smallest in the region, has been heard in some areas of the concession. Patience is needed to sight these owls and after waiting for ages one evening a male and a female were spotted perched one above the other. Had it not been for the reflection from their eyes in the spotlight these little owls would certainly have remained hidden
