Three Simple Yoga Stretches for Travellers
Today we share some tips on three simple yoga based stretches you can easily do while travelling. It is especially important to keep the blood circulating when travelling by aeroplane as sitting in one position for hours in the air can cause your blood flow to become sluggish. However these stretches can be used in most forms of transport.
I have borrowed the following 3 stretches from this website. If you enjoy yoga sign up for their newsletter - I have and find it full of interesting and helpful information on yoga practice.
1. Neck Rolls: These are simple yet help relieve a lot of tension in the neck and shoulders - especially after sleeping against the window or on your fellow passenger''s shoulder!
Simply breathe deeply then roll your head gently all the way around, starting by dropping your chin to your chest. Do 5 rolls in each direction.
2. Eagle Arms: These allow a great stretch for the arms and upper back - great for the driver if you''re travelling by car - pull over for a few moments, stretch your legs and try this one (we suggest you don''t try it while driving!)
Bring your arms in front of you. Twist them together with the right upper arm underneath the left one. Your palms should be together. Drop your shoulders, breathe and raise your arms. Hold for 5, the relax and swap arms.
3. Shoulder Stretch: Good for opening up the shoulders if you''ve been sitting slouched.
Move your butt to the edge of your seat, clasp your hands behind your lower back. Breathe in, breathe out and straighten and raise your arms as high as you can. For an extra stretch drop your chin to your chest.
Check the About Yoga website for more stretches, and also for photographs showing the above stretches.
In-flight tips:
Remember to walk up and down in the aeroplane aisles, drink plenty of water and to stretch your legs - pointing and flexing the toes is an excellent way to get the blood moving in your legs.
Road trip tips:
When driving long distances, take regular breaks to get out of the car, stretch the legs, get some fresh air and keep awake and alert. Don''t pull over in isolated areas - use petrol station fresh up stops. Drink lots of fluid, don''t only eat fast foods but have fresh fruit, dried fruit, nuts and other healthy snacks available.
