According to The Ride''s Facebook page:
The Ride undertakes expeditions to retrace epic journeys that shaped history, with participants pitting themselves against the achievements of historic men of action. These trailblazing adventures that embody the spirit of human resilience will be covered extensively through live online media as well as traditional media.
The first expedition,The Ride of the Peacemaker, was undertaken by Joe Dawson (of Dalton Private Reserve in KwaZulu Natal) and his brother-in-law Barry Armitage, who retraced the hoof prints of Dick King’s horse from Durban to Grahamstown from 30 October - 8 November 2010. (see video clip below).

Now the boys are gearing up for their second expedition: The Ride of the Dandy Fifth. The following exerpt from The Ride website gives the background...
In October 1899 a 17 year old boy, Deneys Reitz, rode out to fight with the Boer Army in its efforts to defend Boer independence and protect the precious gold fields of the Transvaal Republic against the mighty British Empire. Eleven months later, seemingly defeated, Boer generals reorganized and redeployed their civilian forces. So began the final phase of the last Imperial War, and the first guerrilla war the world had seen: a war that heralded the beginning of the end of the British Empire.
Beginning in March 2011, The Ride will retrace Reitz’s gruelling 4500km horseback ride during the guerrilla phase of the war, spanning South Africa from the Mozambique border in the east to Port Nolloth on the Atlantic seaboard in the west. This epic equestrian adventure, along with 3000km of sea and rail legs will chronicle a round trip through the vast South African landscape revealing the fascinating story of the 2nd Boer War as documented by Reitz in his book Commando.
You can be taken along for the ride by following Barry and Joe online at Facebook, Twitter and by subscribing to their Blog.
