Irene, our KZN area assessor, received the following email and pics forwarded from an aquaintance who lives in Sheffield Beach, KwaZulu Natal, where this took place.
"This tanker ran aground at 9.30am Tuesday 26th July.
It was just like watching the film “The Perfect Storm” but without George Clooney!!!!!
Apparently the tanker was on its way to China to be broken up. A tug from Durban tried through the night to attach a line, but the seas were too rough. We saw it break anchor and slide sideways to the shore.
Three helicopters winched the 15 crew off in dreadful conditions.
Apparently officials from Jo’Burg are coming down to organize the pumping of the oil so we don’t get it on our beaches."
