The third little pig was right all along - stone is the best when it comes to building materials - Johann Slee''s award-winning design proves it.
Stellenbosch architect Johann Slee was awarded the prestigious Award of Merit by the South African Institute of Architects for his distinctive African kraal-style Stone House in Pretoria. The unique family home was nominated the ‘Best Building in South Africa’.
Most respondents who voted said the African chic, Cape Dutch and Karoo styles represented a truly South African architecture. The Institute said the world was looking to Africa for a fresh direction in architecture.
In an interview with the Cape Times, Slee explained that Stone House was designed as a living space for a family with two adventurous young boys. Its walls are made out of red ysterklip (iron stone) found on site.
Slee has designed other award-winning homes in places such as De Kelders, Parys and Namibia. His company is also responsible for creating fabulous interiors.
