Southbroom welcomes the whales and waits for the sardines
Liz of The Coral Tree Colony Bed and Breakfast tells us how the KZN South Coast is gearing up for the annual Sardine Run.
We celebrated the arrival of the whales a couple of weeks ago and our great cover picture is from Judy Keuning who runs Emerald Cove Chalets at St Michaels-on-Sea. We''re expecting a wet and cold weekend. Hopefully, this will drop our sea temperature, making it cold enough for the sardines to make an appearance
At the moment the sea temp is just below a balmy 23C with the ambient temp hovering around 30C - an absolutely beautiful day - compared with Cape Town''s water temp of around 16 C or less! The sardines need the water temp to drop below 21 C or more before they''ll come closer to shore.

And accompanying the "sards" come the game fish - dolphins, sharks, tuna, barracuda - the list goes on and on. Spectacular diving by all the sea birds with the gannets diving right in and gorging themselves. Eventually they sit on the water - unable to take off until some of their meal has been digested! And of course the whales get in on the act too, scooping up huge mouthfuls of the little silvery fish.

As for the humans - that''s a story for another time!

To get a look at what the frenzy is all about - go to YouTube and "Sardine Run South Africa". There are a number of great videos taken by divers of the Bait Balls, Dolphins, Sharks, Gannets etc. I found two great clips from previous ''runs'' - "Mighty Whale Joins the Sardine Run Feeding Frenzy" made in 2009 and one which I originally watched a year or two ago. It appears the guy who filmed it/put it together has modified it - still amazing -"Video Over de Sardine Run in Zuid Afrika" which runs for about 7 minutes.
