South African wins Comrades for first time in seven years
It''s been a long time since we''ve cheered a local runner coming first across the finish line at the epic Comrades Marathon. Yesterday that''s just what we did!

Thirty-five year old Ludwick Mamabolo brought the title home when he crossed the Comrades Marathon finishing line at Kingsmead in Durban yesterday, in a time of 5hrs 31min 5sec.

It was the first time in seven years that a South African had won the world renowned ultra-marathon - in 2005 Sipho Ngomane made us proud.

At the end of the gruelling race, Mamabolo fell down in tears - they were tears of joy and pride!  He told reporters he had done it for South Africa, saying:

"It is a dream come true. It pained me every day when I would look at the papers and see that no South African had been tipped to win."

Fellow South African, Mthembu Bongmusa, was second in 5:32.40.

Another five local athletes finishing in the top 10.

Homegrown legends Zola Budd and Bruce Fordyce crossed the finishing line together in 8:06:09.
